week 3 tutorials

 Tutorial 1

How to print Black

In this tutorial, I learned the difference between 100% K and rich black.

100% K refers to a pure black color that is made using only the black ink in a CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) color model. "K" stands for Key, which is typically the black ink in four-color printing. When you use 100% K, you're printing with just black ink and no other colors are mixed in. It's often used for text and areas that need to appear very dark, such as black text or simple graphic elements.

Rich Black Rich black, on the other hand, is a deeper, fuller black that is created by combining black ink (K) with one or more of the other primary colors (cyan, magenta, or yellow) in varying percentages. A typical rich black mix might be something like 60% Cyan, 40% Magenta, 40% Yellow, and 100% Black. This combination gives a richer, deeper black tone than just using 100% K on its own. Rich black is often used for areas where a more vibrant or darker black is needed, like backgrounds, images, and larger blocks of black. It adds depth and dimension to the print, making it look more visually striking.

Tutorial 2

Easily resize elements of your layout

In this tutorial I learned how to place artwork or text in a frame, you can still reposition or resize the frame, the contents within the frame, or both. one way I was originally resizing images was by going back and forth between the direct selection tool and the selection tool to resize each image or bounding box containting the image inside while holdoing the shift key to not warp the image. But there is a more simple way by using the Frame Fitting tool in the properties panel.

Article 2b

The project was an exercise in both graphic design and Photoshop skills, as I aimed to replicate the iconic layout and style of National Geographic while adding a personal twist. I chose space exploration as my subject because it has fascinated me for as long as I can remember.

Article 2a

week 2 tutorials

Tutorial 1
Auto Style in InDesign

This Tutorial is about a feature that enables you to transform unformatted text into beautiful documents by applying multiple paragraph styles with a single click.

Tutorial 2
Create a new document

In this tutorial I learned how to create a brand new document using InDesign now after launching Indesign click create new to open a new document dialog box. I found this fairly similar to creating a new document on adobe illustrator. Now one of the insetting things I learned was how to Specify the number of pages and select Facing Pages to create a double-page spread layout used in magazines and books. Indicate the number of columns on your pages and the space between columns (Column Gutter).

Tutorial 3
Replace Missing fonts

In this tutorial I learned how to fix and replace missing fonts with a default font by substituting with another font available.  A great tip I also learned was.

You can enable Adobe font auto-activation, so when an InDesign document contains any missing fonts, they are automatically activated in the background. To enable the option, on macOS, choose InDesign > Preferences > File handling, or on Windows, choose Edit > Preferences > File handling and select Auto-activate Adobe Fonts.

My Ads

Quarter Page Ad 4.25 x 5.5

I chose to design an advertisement for the Heart of Florida Legal Aid Society with a focus on helping elderly and disabled individuals because I wanted to raise awareness about the vital legal support this organization provides to those in need. Many elderly and disabled individuals may face challenges navigating legal matters, and my goal was to create an ad that not only informs but also reassures them that help is available.

 Half Page Ad 8.5 x 5.5

I designed an advertisement for my restaurant project because I wanted to effectively communicate the unique experience and offerings of my restaurant to potential customers. The goal was to create a visually appealing and engaging ad that would attract attention and generate excitement about the food, ambiance, and overall dining experience.

Quarter Page Ad 4.25 x 5.5

I designed an advertisement for Student Services because I wanted to highlight the essential support and resources available to students. Student Services often go underappreciated, yet they play a critical role in a student's academic and personal success. My goal was to make sure that students were aware of the variety of services offered, from academic advising to counseling and career services, and to communicate how these resources can directly contribute to their well-being and success.

Full Page Ad 8.5 x 11

My design choices centered around using imagery that evokes a sense of pride, honor, and community. I incorporated symbols like the American flag and military  branch insignia, but I also ensured the visuals showed two veterans both male and female in a  professional settings to emphasize patriotism. I focused on a clean, bold layout that would stand out and be easily readable, making sure the key message of "Empowering Veterans to Succeed" was clear and visible.

Creative Blog 4

In this week's Creative Blog I wanted to share an exercise I read about in a book from class called Caffeine for the Creative Mind by (Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee Oldfield). The creative exercise was called Back in my day, the fans didn't have lasers. I am tasked with picking any sport and how it can potentially be changed with advances in technology by the year 2500 AD. The sport I chose to go with was the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship).

Improved Performance Analysis

  • AI and Data Analytics- Fighter performance could be analyzed in more depth with AI and machine learning, tracking things like movement, striking patterns, and defensive tactics. This data could help coaches and fighters make more informed decisions about training regimens, fight strategies, and recovery.

  • Wearable Technology- Devices that track biometrics, like heart rate, muscle strain, and fatigue levels, could provide real-time insights during training or even during a fight. This could lead to smarter training routines, injury prevention, and optimal recovery plans.

Enhanced Fan Engagement

  • Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR) VR could allow fans to experience UFC events from the perspective of the fighters themselves, creating more immersive experiences. AR could be used to display real-time statistics or fighter bios during events, enhancing the live viewing experience.

  • Interactive Broadcasts- With advances in interactive technology, viewers might be able to choose different camera angles, follow specific fighters, or access real-time data about the fighters' performance during a fight.

Fight Preparation and Training

  • Simulated Training with AI- Fighters could train with AI-driven opponents in virtual environments that mimic real-life opponents or situations, helping them prepare for any scenario.

  • Advanced Recovery Techniques- Technologies like cryotherapy, infrared therapy, and even new forms of physical therapy could evolve, improving how fighters recover from injuries or manage muscle recovery.

Creative Blog Week 3

In this week's Creative Blog I wanted to share an exercise I read about in a book from class called Caffeine for the Creative Mind by (Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee Oldfield). The creative exercise was called Don't Push That Button? This article talks about how  James Bond gets all the cool toys in the movies. But if the average joe could have some gadget what would they be and their purpose? In this exercise I was tasked with choosing my top 3 perfect client meeting spy gadgets.

1. Smart Glasses with AR (Augmented Reality) Display

  • Purpose: To take discreet notes, display meeting agendas, or even scan and analyze documents in real-time.

  • Features:

    • A small heads-up display for notifications and notes.

    • Voice commands for note-taking or quick information retrieval.

    • Camera for scanning documents and images.

    • Bluetooth connectivity for syncing with your smartphone.

2. Hidden Earpiece with Real-time Translation & Notes

    • Tiny, almost invisible design.

    • Live transcription or translation capabilities.

    • Ability to communicate with a remote assistant or AI for support (secretly).

    • Can record conversation or take notes discreetly.

3. Pen with Built-in Recorder

  • Purpose: To secretly record meetings while writing.

  • Features:

    • Functioning as an ordinary pen with a stylish design.

    • Audio recording with built-in memory.

    • Vibration alerts when recording starts/stops to notify you.

    • Rechargeable battery that lasts several hours.

Creative Blog Week 2

In this week's Creative Blog I wanted to share an exercise I read about in a book from class called Caffeine for the Creative Mind by (Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee Oldfield). The creative exercise was called Is that a Fire Pole? In This article creative minded architects have raised the bar on luxurious modern home design. I am tasked with creating one fantastic feature I would build into my next home if money was no object and anything could be done.

I started to think we all have Alexa and Siri who help us throughout the day but if we could have a more intelligent and capable system that would be interesting.

Automated AI System

  • An AI-powered system would monitor and adjust water, light, temperature, and humidity for optimal plant growth. It would also let you know what’s ready for harvest or what needs more attention. The system could even assist in planning meals based on the produce you have available, integrating smart appliances in your kitchen.

Some Advantages of Automated AI Systems would include.

Efficiency- They can handle large-scale tasks or complex calculations faster and more accurately than humans.

Cost Reduction- They reduce the need for manual labor and human involvement, which can lower operational costs.

Scalability- Automated AI systems can manage increasing amounts of data or tasks without the need to scale human resources.

24/7 Operation-  Unlike humans, AI systems don’t need breaks or sleep, making them ideal for continuous operations.

Reduced Errors- Automation reduces human error, particularly in repetitive or data-heavy tasks.

Creative Blog Week 1

In this week's Creative Blog I wanted to share an exercise I read about in a book from class called Caffeine for the Creative Mind by (Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee Oldfield). The creative exercise was called Is that a Diamond studded Coffee Mug? In this exercise the article talks about how at some point of time most people would like to be rich and famous living in Beverly Hills and shopping on Rodeo Drive. So I was tasked with writing down ten things a single woman living in Beverly Hills would own.

Designer Handbag – A luxury handbag from brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, or Gucci is almost a staple for someone living in Beverly Hills.

High-End Car – A sleek, expensive car like a Tesla, Porsche, or a classic convertible (perhaps a BMW or Mercedes-Benz) would be common.

Luxury Apartment or Condo – A stylish, well-located apartment or penthouse in the heart of Beverly Hills or nearby areas, with great views and modern amenities.

State-of-the-Art Tech Gadgets – The latest iPhone, smart home system, and other premium gadgets like a top-tier laptop or tablet.

Walk-In Closet Full of Designer Clothes – A curated collection of high-end clothing and shoes from brands like Prada, Valentino, and Louboutin, often housed in a walk-in closet.

Fine Jewelry – Statement pieces like diamond earrings, a Rolex watch, or a designer bracelet, perhaps passed down or bought as investments.

Personal Trainer – A personal trainer or membership to a luxurious fitness center (like a private gym).

Spa & Beauty Products – Premium skincare and beauty products, such as La Mer, Dr. Dennis Gross, or items from local Beverly Hills spas.

Stylish Furniture and Home Decor – High-end furniture, maybe mid-century modern or contemporary, along with art pieces, custom-made decor, and designer lighting fixtures.

Private Chef or Gourmet Kitchen Appliances – Some may have a private chef or a fully-equipped gourmet kitchen with top-tier appliances from brands like Wolf, Sub-Zero, or Viking.

Week 1 Tutorials 1 & 2

Tutorial 1

Add Pages to your Document

In this tutorial I learned how to specify the number of pages when you create a new file, and how to add and remove pages in an existing project. By doing this you can control the number of pages in your document, add pages to a file, duplicate a page, and delete pages.

In this photo I added 3 new pages to my original 4 page document and deleted the last page that was a duplicate layout of page 2.

Tutorial 2

Change the color of content

In this Tutorial I learned how to change the color of content using the fill color and stroke color in the properties panel. Then I sample formatting and apply that formatting to other content using the eyedropper tool. The eyedropper tool captures formatting from an object I clicked and applies that same formatting to the selected content.

Creativity Blog Week 4

In this week's Creative Blog I wanted to share an exercise I read about in a book from class called Caffeine for the Creative Mind by (Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee Oldfield). The creative exercise was called Trick or Pantone Book? In this creative exercise It is halloween and I am tasked with creating costumes for a graphic designer, illustrator, photographer, art director, musician, and writer.

graphic designer- Outfit as the four colors used in printing (cyan, magenta, yellow, and key/black). You can make a costume with colored sections or body paint to represent each color.

illustrator- Adobe Illustrator Tool – You can dress up as your favorite design tool like the Pen Tool, Selection Tool, or even the Layers panel. Use signs or props that represent the tool's functions.

photographer- Classic Camera – Dress up as a classic camera! You could wear a cardboard box or large foam piece shaped like an old-school film camera or a DSLR. Add a lens and other camera details, and you’re good to go!

art director- "The Mood Board" – Dress as a literal mood board! Attach photos, color swatches, textures, and design elements all over your clothes, creating a collage of inspiration and ideas. You can even add little design notes or sticky notes for extra flair.

musician- Rock Star – Go all-out with a classic rock star look: leather jacket, ripped jeans, aviator sunglasses, and an electric guitar prop. Think of iconic musicians like David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, or Jimi Hendrix for some inspiration.

writer-  Classic Author (e.g., Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe) – Dress as a famous author like William Shakespeare with a ruffled collar, a quill, and a parchment scroll. Or channel Edgar Allan Poe with a dark, Victorian-style outfit.
