In this week's Creative Blog, I wanted to share an exercise I read about in a book from class called Caffeine for the Creative Mind by Stefan Mumaw and Wendy Lee Oldfield. The creative exercise was called Is that Hairnet Real? This creative exercise talks about how there are magnificent memorials to honor those of military service or those who have done great deeds. In this exercise, I was tasked with creating a memorial for three everyday heroes, like an elementary school bus driver, a hotel housekeeper, and a high school cafeteria worker.
My idea of a memorial would be to set it in a public park or garden for all to see, and it would probably consist of a life-size bronze statue capturing an action from their everyday life. A school bus driver standing beside an open bus door with one hand raised in a friendly wave as if greeting the children they pick up every morning. A hotel housekeeper adjusting a freshly made bed, head slightly looking down in focus and care. Her presence shows pride in unnoticed labor done with excellence. Lastly, a high school cafeteria worker leaning over a serving line, perhaps offering a tray with a smile, her eyes meeting an unseen student’s with kindness.
